How to read your figure

Gratuity is only one line in a final settlement, and that is where most shortfalls hide. A settlement that looks close on gratuity can still be short on leave pay or unpaid salary, so check each line on its own.

Here is a full example. Basic salary AED 5,000, total salary AED 8,000, four years of service, 10 unused leave days, 15 unpaid salary days, and a AED 1,000 advance. Gratuity is AED 14,000. Leave pay is AED 1,666.67. Unpaid salary is AED 4,000. Take off the AED 1,000 advance and the total is AED 18,666.67.

Which salary is leave paid on? Basic salary only, the same base as gratuity.

Which salary is notice pay based on? Total salary for the days not served, when the employer waives notice.

What deductions are allowed? Loans, advances, and amounts set by law or a court order. Ask for the document behind any other deduction.
